4 Key Ways To Make It Easier To Pack and Move Belongings

Let’s get real for a moment… moving is a tedious ordeal that can make a person as if they’re going crazy. There is so much to do: secure a rental truck, request a mail transfer, ensure the utilities are turned on at your new place and off at your old one, etc. However, another headache of moving is packing up a home’s belongings.

This is where people begin to feel the most stress.

Be it a lot of stuff or a little of it; packing is one of those intimidating aspects of moving. Not everybody has the fortitude to go through their home and pack it all up. If you’re in the process of moving and feel overwhelmed, what can you do to put yourself at ease?

Focus On Less-Used Rooms First

Everybody wants to feel as if they’ve accomplished something. When it comes to packing, give yourself that accomplished feeling by tackling the rooms you rarely use first. For instance, if you have a den or basement that’s rarely used, take boxes into the room to start packing. Make sure to use a permanent marker to label those boxes to designate which room they are from and will go to.

What you’re doing is tricking your mind into believing that the packing process is much easier than it would be. Do not start in one room and then go to another because you are bored. Pack up the entire first room before you move on to the second. Finish the second room next, and then start on your next one.

If you have a room used for storage with boxes already there, begin in it.

The key is to break up your home into manageable tasks, so you don’t feel overwhelmed. Before long, the entire home will be packed up, labeled and ready for moving.

Side note: Keep the boxes in the room until you are ready to move them. You don’t want them in spaces you have yet to pack up, as it can lead to those overwhelming feelings.

Toss Out No Longer Needed Possessions

Most people realize they have too much stuff in their home when they are moving. This is the best time to get rid of any belongings you don’t want or need in your next home. Donate clothes you don’t wear or kitchen items you don’t use. If you have any broken furniture, consider tossing it out or donating it to someone who could use it. For example, a young couple just starting may be willing to use your old loveseat or dining room set.

By eliminating items you don’t need, you reduce how much needs packing up and brought to the new home.

Begin Packing Early

Most people do not have the time or ability to spend a weekend or two packing up their home for a move. Begin the packing process early, so you don’t feel overwhelmed and rushed, bringing things you don’t really need. If you know you’ll be moving within the next couple of months, start going through your stuff and pack up what you know you will not need.

Use A Professional Moving Service

There’s no shame in asking for help from a professional moving company. They can actually be your best friend in the grand scheme of things. Most people trust these individuals with their most fragile possessions or furniture to ensure they arrive at their new home in the same condition they left. Professional movers help you finish what you have started and ensure you’re ready to move when that day is upon you.
