How To Make Extra Cash Selling Unwanted Items
Posted on Apr 25, 2022 by Top Movers Global

Moving can be expensive unless you’re careful. Every item you load onto the moving truck adds weight, which adds to the cost.
While getting organized for your move, you should sort through everything and pull out those items that you no longer need or want. By reducing the number of boxes and the total weight being transported, you’ll certainly save money. And while you’re at it, why not take this opportunity to make some extra cash as well?
Items to Sell
Walk through your home room-by-room with a pen listing everything you do not want to take to the new house. And then determine which items might be worth offering for sale.
Here are the types of items people would likely be willing to buy used:
• Furniture, kitchen appliances, lamps, table linens, wall mirrors and bedding
• Audio/video equipment, TVs, DVD players/DVDs, photography equipment, and CDs/records
• Baby/children’s furniture and bedding, bikes, toys, books, and board games
• Patio furniture, gardening supplies, and lawn-care equipment
• China, crystal pieces and glassware, flatware, and cooking utensils
• Sports and fitness equipment
1. Have a Yard or Garage Sale
Many people who are getting ready to move plan a yard or garage sale to make some money off things they no longer want. You’ve heard the expression, “One person’s trash is another person’s treasure.”
If you are able to do this, here’s some advice you may want to consider:
Plan Ahead
Give yourself about three weeks to get everything ready.
Check with your municipality to see if there are any rules or restrictions you need to abide by. You may need a permit, a fee may be required, you may need to charge sales tax or all of the above. Find out what you’re allowed to do regarding signs and flyers around the neighborhood.
Find out if any of your neighbors would like to participate in a joint sale.
It’s a lot more fun when you’re sharing the work, plus it could increase profits.
The more variety you have in terms of items for sale, the more customers are likely to come, which means greater success.
If the event is being held on your property, discuss this with your insurance company to ensure that your homeowner’s policy has liability coverage for injuries.
Collect boxes and shopping bags for the big day.
Along with having boxes and shopping bags on hand, use white labelling stickers for pricing each item and be willing to bargain with potential buyers.
Make sure you are prepared with plenty of cash to make change.
2. Set up a Tent at Your Local Flea Market
Local flea markets are the perfect place to sell used household goods and clothing. They usually charge participants a nominal amount to reserve a spot for a table and tent. Flea markets usually advertise and attract a lot of bargain hunters. Make sure you set up ahead of time and have everything nicely displayed. If you’re selling clothing, it’s best to bring racks, so each item can be nicely hung up.
3. Post Your Items on eBay and/or Craigslist
If you have something you no longer want but think someone else would love, why not post it on eBay and/or Craigslist for sale? When you use these online platforms to sell things they get a lot more exposure than they would otherwise. Make sure you have great photos and that you do not misrepresent the item’s quality.
4. Donate Items that Don’t Sell to Charity
Find out what charitable organizations in your community take donated items and anything you can’t sell can usually be donated. Many communities have Goodwill and Salvation Army stores that welcome all kinds of donations. In return they will give you a receipt that will allow you to take a tax deduction.
