How far before moving day should I book the movers? 

You should book your moving company well in advance to ensure that they can do the job on the date you want. Their availability will depend on where you live and where you’re moving, the time of year you’re planning to move, and other factors.  

Movers are especially busy during spring and summer, starting May 1st until the end of September. So, if you’re planning to move during those months, book the date as soon as possible.   

Why is booking my move well in advance so important? 

If you want your move to go smoothly, it’s important to give yourself and your movers plenty of time to plan everything out. As soon as you know you’re moving, start looking into moving companies, and find one that provides the services that you specifically need. Moving is stressful enough without having to rush through everything at the last minute. To minimize the stress on you, your family, and the movers, you need to start getting ready for moving day well ahead of time.  

When is it best to schedule the moving company? 

This will greatly depend on where you’re going to move. There are some regions of the U.S. that seem to pose few challenges when it comes to capacity and/or logistics, whereas other areas may be very challenging.  

To give you an idea of what you may be up against, here is some basic information on the different types of moves:  

Interstate   

If you’re going to move out of state or clear across the country from May 1st through September, you’ll need to schedule it way ahead of time. Truthfully, no matter what time of year you’re planning to move, it always helps to book it well in advance.  

Go online and research moving companies to make sure you find one with a lot of experience doing interstate moves. Local movers are not really licensed to handle interstate moves. Any mover crossing state lines must be properly licensed by the U.S. government and be prepared to follow federal laws regulating interstate moves. This allows consumers to be protected throughout the entire process, even after the move.  

Intrastate  

If you’re going to relocate within the state you’re currently residing in and are doing it sometime from May 1st through September, you’ll need to get it scheduled way in advance. Intrastate movers get booked up during these months, so get your move booked as far in advance as possible.  

Local   

Even if you’re only moving a short distance locally or at least within your state, it will still require plenty of planning. It is always best to reach out to your local moving companies as early as you can. This is especially the case if you’ve planned your move during the summer season, from May 1st through September.  

International 

Moving overseas is a huge undertaking because the process is more complex. It will require specific documentation, customs forms and clearances, and shipping logistics. This all takes time to arrange, so you will definitely need to get this all started many months in advance.
