How to Manage Your Move if it Rains on Moving Day

You’ve spent months packing up and getting everything ready for your move. It never occurred to you that it might rain on moving day since it’s been warm and sunny for the past month. But the day’s finally arrived and all you see are dark clouds and wet pavement. What are you going to do? It’s too late to cancel and it doesn’t look like this rainstorm will let up anytime soon.

Here’s how to manage your move while limiting the mess and any potential damage:

Your movers will certainly use plastic sheeting to protect your floors. But you’ll still need to mop up when mud gets tracked in. You’ll be using your mop and bucked throughout the day, and they will likely be the last items you toss into the truck.

Back the Moving Truck Up Close to the Front Door

You will want to do everything possible to reduce the time your boxes and other items are being rained on. Ask your movers to back the truck up and park it as close to your door as possible. Cover your porch with plastic or tarps to minimize the chances of your items getting rained on.

Make Sure Everyone is Wearing Non-Slip Shoes

See that family and friends helping with your move have non-slip shoes they can wear. You should also have plastic ponchos on hand for everyone, especially your movers.

How to Protect Your Items

As previously mentioned, you should cover your porch with plastic or tarps. You may even be able to attach a tarp to the top of the moving truck and attach the other end to the top of your door frame. Do what you can to limit the amount of rain coming down in the space between your house and the truck.

Put Down Floor Maps & Wipe Shoes

It’s impossible to keep out all mud when it’s raining, so put down rubber floor mats in the entry way being used. Have towels handy so everyone can wipe the mud off their shoes.

Cover Boxes & Furniture with Plastic and/or Tarps

The last thing you want is soggy boxes and wet furniture. So again, you’ll need plastic sheeting and tarps. Plastic can easily get blown off, so it would be best to have tarps on hand. Small boxes can be wrapped in trash bags, but make sure you secure them with tape.

Dry Everything Off in the Back of the Truck

Once items are placed in the truck, someone should be there with a pile of towels drying everything off. This can reduce the chances of rainwater seeping through cracks in the plastic. This will also minimize the moisture your items are exposed to inside the truck while in transit.

If all this preparation seems a bit too much since it may not even rain, trust me you will be extremely relieved to be ready if it does. Your professional movers will make your move as stress-free as possible by handling all the logistics. But it never hurts to do your part just in case moving day turns out to be a rainy day.
