Packing & Moving a Large Mirror Can be Challenging

A large hanging mirror is not only extremely fragile, but also heavy and quite cumbersome. If it’s not packed and moved very carefully, it can easily shatter.
Therefore, if you have a large mirror that you want transported to your new home, there are some basic precautions to take to safeguard the glass and frame to ensure that it arrives at the new destination intact.
Protecting the Glass
Before taking the mirror down from the wall, you will want to protect the glass with some plastic moving tape by making an large X with it across the entire surface. This way, if the mirror drops you won’t have glass shards flying everywhere.
Take a large piece of bubble wrap, corrugated cardboard, or Styrofoam and cut it to fit the glass. Place it on the mirror, and tape it securely to the frame. Add several more layers of bubble wrap, cardboard, and/or foam until the mirror is well-padded.
Safeguarding the Frame
The glass mirror clearly needs the most protection, but the frame can also be damaged in a move. Scrapes, dents, and dings can ruin the look of the mirror, and possibly make it worthless.
You can reduce the chances of damage by buying some plastic protectors to attach to the edges and corners of the frame. These don’t cost much, can be reused, and you can find them in a variety of sizes and thicknesses.
Once you’ve added all this cushioning, wrap the entire thing up in a moving blanket, another layer of bubble wrap or foam. Do this just like you would if you were wrapping a package. Then, tape it all up before loading it into the truck.
Protecting the Mirror While in Transit
Because of its size and weight it’s going to take two or three adults to carry and load the mirror into the truck. It would be best to place it upright, leaning against the inside wall of the truck. Put something soft on the other side of the mirror, so it fits snugly between them. This could be a mattress or sofa. Do not lay the mirror down flat as something could easily fall on it, breaking the glass.
Transport the Mirror Separately if Possible
In any household move, there’s going to be a lot of chaos. If you want to ensure that your mirror is as safe as possible, it would be best to move it separately. Find somewhere safe to keep your mirror stored until you’ve finished moving.
It’s when the movers come in and carry out lots of boxes and pieces of furniture to load onto the truck that things are most at risk. If your mirror is being moved at the same time as all your other possessions, it could be left outside where people could bump into or trip over it, things could be dropped on it, or it could even topple over and break.
Once moving day is behind you, you can go and pick up your mirror and safely transport it to your new home. With some help you can safely hang it up in just the right spot.
