How To Pack Up and Move Your Home Office

Many people these days work from home, and if you are one of them, you know how much equipment it takes to have a fully functioning office. If you are planning to move it’s important to minimize your downtime.
Here are some ways to help you do just that:
Plan Ahead
Let your coworkers and/or clients know well in advance the dates that you will be away from your desk due to the move. This tells them that you won’t be available to handle any crucial tasks that may pop up during that time. Finish any assignments due on those days ahead of time and get started on tasks that are due shortly thereafter. Make sure that your new place is hooked up to the internet before you move in. This way you can get your office set up quickly.
Packing Up
Rarely Used Items
Start by packing the things you don’t use for your work, like photos and other decorative items. Those can go in the bottom of boxes, with the items rarely used at the top. Don’t tape them up until right before you move on the off chance that you’ll need something.
Office Supplies
Rather than taking all your pens, pencils, paper clips, and other small office supplies out of their desk holders, just tape them up in the holder and put the whole thing in the box. Then when you unpack, you can just cut off the tape and place the desk holders with their items intact back where they belong on your desk.
Furniture and Filing Cabinets
There is no point in emptying out your desk drawers and filing cabinets. However, if there are empty spaces inside, crunch up some bubble wrap or packing paper to keep things from sliding around when being moved. The night before moving day, wrap your furniture and filing cabinets in heavy plastic, tightly taped to keep the drawers from sliding open during the move. Once you arrive at the new house, just remove the outside wrapping and the bubble wrap or packing wrap from the inside and you’re all set.
Moving Your Electronics
Computers, Printers, and Copiers
It is too risky to place your electronics in the moving truck, so plan on transporting them in the car with you. The last thing you want is for them to get damaged in an accident. Should the truck get unexpectedly delayed, you will have your computer(s) and other electronics safely with you to hook up and use as needed. By following this advice, you can avoid any unnecessary delay in your work schedule. If everything goes as planned you’ll be ready to start working again the following day!
