Avoid These 5 Common Mistakes When Moving
Moving an entire household is usually a very stressful undertaking. But it can become even more stressful if certain common mistakes are made that add time and overly complicates the process.
Here is a list of the most common mistakes people make when moving, which of course we recommend avoiding:

1. Procrastinating
If you leave everything to the last possible moment, the task becomes much more overwhelming than it needs to be. If you avoid the temptation to put everything off and instead start preparing well in advance, you’ll thank yourself in the end.
People tend to think they can pack everything up in a relatively short period of time, but that’s rarely the case. There are so many decisions to be made about what to bring to the new house, what to donate and what to toss out that we recommend that you start packing several weeks ahead of time.

2. Trying to Do Everything Yourself
Many people think that they can save a lot of money by handling the move all on their own. They assume that all they have to do is rent a truck and have friends and family over to help on moving day. This might work if you don’t have much stuff and nothing of any real value. But that’s often not the case. Without professional help, moving day  will likely be far more stressful than you imagined. Depending on how much stuff you’re loading onto the truck and how far away you’re moving, chances are that you will be a lot better off by working with a reputable moving company.

3. Not Packing an Overnight Kit
When it comes to moving, you will need to pack a separate overnight kit that contains all of the items you are sure to need on moving day as well as your first night in the new house. Your survival kit should include toothbrushes, hand sanitizer, snacks, drinks, toilet paper, dog and/or cat food and treats (if you have pets).

4. Forgetting to Label Boxes
If your boxes aren’t properly identified and labelled you will have no idea which room to put them in when you arrive at your new house.
What works best is to use a large marking pen to identify the contents of each box and which room to put it in. Some people apply a color coordinated label to each box that lets everyone know where it goes. Labelling your boxes will save you and your movers a lot of time in the end.

5. Not Arranging for a Babysitter
As excited as your kids are to be moving into a new home, moving day can also cause them anxiety. Seeing their toys and other belongings packed up and put on a truck can be very upsetting to young children. We recommend having a babysitter or family member lined up to watch them on moving day. If that cannot be arranged, try to keep them in one room for as long as possible and have the movers enter that room last.
